Question meme thingy.

Sorry if you see this twice - had issues with getting it to post.
sabrinaphynn gave me these awesome things to talk about:
1) Where do you go, mentally, just before drifting off into sleep?
Man, it really depends. Sometimes it'll just be stuff like work or whatever I've got to do the next day. Sometimes it's just a fuzzy drifting blankness. Sometimes just as I'm drifting, I'll start to have really vivid, often repetitive dreams.
2) What do you think of as your greatest fault or character deficit?
I make grand plans then procrastinate the fuck out of them (see, learning to sew, my book review site, getting another tattoo etc etc). That's my biggest flaw I think. Also fear of failure means I'm more likely to not try than try and fail. And oh god, I whine a lot.
3) What place do you think of as home, or have you yet to find it?
Most of the time I'm content, really. I love it here, and I've got a good life right now, so I'd say this was my home. Sometimes I do have a bit of a 'I want to go hooome' moment, but I'm never sure what that means. I definitely do not want to go back to my parents house - I think it means I want whatever is messing up my safespace (head and physical) to leave me alone.
4) Tell me about the latest book you read. And what you did not like in the book.
I'm currently reading the third book of the Millennium series. The books are good, really engaging, but sometimes there are too many needless details. It can get a bit confusing, and just. Why? Why do I need to know this? I do not care, and it will never be referenced again.
5) favorite rare pairing in any of your fandoms.
Ooo, John/Mycroft in Sherlock fandom. Alex/Hank in xmen:fc fandon. I don't think I have a rare pairing in Merlin. I tend to ship all the people with all the people, so I guess I'm lucky that way, I'm pretty flexible.
6) Vampires, Weres, or Other? What is your favorite AU to read, and favorite to write.
Hmm..I've never been a fan of supernatural AUs (well, it's more I've never chosen to read them, I guess), which is probably to my detriment. I don't think I have any preference, it just depends on the re-imagining of the supernatural. I love X-men style supernaturalness, and I love Being Human's take on vampires/werewolves.
I would like to do a being human crossover with something, but no idea what.
7) Name five songs that would be included in the soundtrack of your life and explain why they are included. (this one is a guest inquiry from husband.EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: as Jenn has said in the comments, this came from her husband, not mine. I didn't even consider reading it that way >.<)
Ooo, this is hard! This is more of a list of songs I'll always love and why, which I guess sort of answers the question? How I'm supposed to limit this to 5 songs I'll never know.
So (links because embeds would just break people's internet):
Livin' on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. I was brought up on this song, and I still adore it. It's been a soundtrack in my life, and fairly fitting given my complete lack of wider life plan.
Bring me to life by Evanescence. This marked my first foray into harder rock, and it's a love that's held fast for a long time. Even when I get seduced by other genres, this type of music is something I always come back to. When I first brought this album I must have listened to it on repeat more times than I could count.
The Beat that my Heart Skipped by Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip. This started my love affair with spoken word and rap. I love this song, so much. It opened my eyes and ears to a genre I'd never thought about. I also adore his lyrics: But when you heart skips a beat it's ruthless and aimless. How very true.
Made Up Love Song #43 but The Guillemots. My favourite song about being in love. I love you through sparks and shining dragons, I do. Now there's poetry in an empty coke can. I like how simple the song is (mostly), and how fantastic the lyrics are. It's a nice representation of the loud and quiet of love.
Comfortably Numb by the Scissor Sisters. Always a controversial choice :P I love falsettos, done well they're incredible. I've already written about my love of cover versions and this is no exception. It's just so wonderfully different.
Comment on this post with ‘Hit me, Gem, one more time!' and I'll give you seven things I want you to talk about. They may make sense or they may be very random. Then post that list to your journal with your commentary. Other people can get lists from you and the meme merrily perpetuates itself

Date: 2012-05-21 08:10 am (UTC)Okaaay questions:
I'm going to pinch Jenn's husband's question, because I found it really interesting to think about:
1)Name five songs that would be included in the soundtrack of your life and explain why they are included.
2)What's your comfort food?
3)What is the best gift that you have ever received?
4)If you were given a choice between flying, x-ray vision or telepathy, which would you choose?
5)Do you have a favourite word, phrase or quote?
6)Do you have any teddy bears/other stuffed animals? If so, do you have a favourite?
7)We are having a picnic! What foodstuffs/beverages/other would you bring?

Date: 2012-05-21 07:33 pm (UTC)That's What You Get (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kz6hNDlEEg&ob=av2n) by Paramore. I made a post about them, but Paramore was a very large part of my life. I got attached to them, both musically and personally, but more than that, the song is about what happens when you think with your heart, which is something I do a lot. I'm either too emotional or too intellectual about everything.
Little Lion Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xd8tOAJMA8Q) by Mumford and Sons. These guys are amazing and I think everyone can relate to this. "It was not your fault, but mine...I really f---ed it up this time. Didn't I , my dear?"
Take Your Love with Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouT0ZVISRWc) by Sophie Madeleine. I believe that no one can get anywhere without carrying someone's love in their heart.
Guns and Horses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDwbHeR0UYc&ob=av2e) by Ellie Goulding. There are some people, where I wish I could do things for them, but I learned the hard way that you have to let people be who they are and make their own choices.
Don't Stop Believing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0H3bJHWGl4) by Journey. This was the theme song for my graduating high school class. I don't ever think I'll get they lyrics out of my head.
2)What's your comfort food? Soup and bread, specifically chowder.
3)What is the best gift that you have ever received? I hate to sound materialistic, but I love my Kindle Fire.
4)If you were given a choice between flying, x-ray vision or telepathy, which would you choose?
FLYING! People's thoughts are their own privates mazes of doom that I want no part of and having X-ray vision sounds cool, but I don't want to be the one to know my friend is pregnant before she does.
5)Pick your perfect x-men team Wolverine, Magneto, Charles Xavier, Mystique, Storm, Scott Summers, and Emma Frost, if they wouldn't all kill each other on sight.
6)Do you have any teddy bears/other stuffed animals? If so, do you have a favourite? At my university, for Valentine's Day, they have a "build a bear" thing where you make a stuffed animal, so from that I have a monkey and a wolf. However, my favorite is this unicorn (http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/rr1/analise010/IMG_0210.jpg) from

Date: 2012-05-21 07:45 pm (UTC)In case you haven't noticed, I love food. If we were having a picnic, I'd bring everything, but drinks.
As an appetizer, I'd probably make this chicken salad (http://simplygluten-free.com/blog/2012/03/gluten-free-crunchy-chicken-peanut-salad-recipe.html) sans peanuts, in case of nut allergies. For the main course, I would probably break out a grill and feed people burgers/chicken with various toppings. Then for dessert, I'd make something refreshing like lemon bars (http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/01/lemon-bars/).

Date: 2012-05-21 09:15 pm (UTC)I really want to try proper American BBQ/grilled things some day. Because I quite enjoy what we call BBQ and I know it's a combination of laughable and sacrilege in comparison.

Date: 2012-05-21 12:14 pm (UTC)Lemonade (the fizzy kind), red wine, bread, fruit salad (Harry says with pineapple), chèvre with chives, veggie platter with ranch dip.
And my decadent chocolate chip blonde brownies for dessert.
2)Do you have a favourite word, phrase or quote?
Favorite word: Actually... (the way my Harry says it. Usually followed by a long explanation of facts and Harry's version of the world)
As for a phrase... Hmm... Not really... Maybe "Meep!" a la Beaker? It says so much...
Favorite quote:
Dorothy L. Sayers: Anyone may have the melody if they allow us the counterpoint.
3)What is your favourite song to sing?
Ooo.. Hard. Haven't been singing much lately. I loved singing Vivaldi's "Laudaumus Te" from "Gloria" back when I was in better voice about twenty-odd years ago.
These days much more likely to be something Disney- Mulan. Though presently, Greg is holding a hand over my mouth so that I won't sing- my biggest critic!
4)What's your favorite type of candy/sweet type thing?
In short- chocolate.
To eat- handmade truffles.
To make- chocolate dipped fruit.
5)Is there anything you're particularly not looking forward to this week? Anything you are?
Not really looking forward to the phone calls I have to make for work.
And I am planning on getting my hair cut and colored, finally!,
6)Sunny or rainy or snowy?
I love all types of weather. The patter of rain on the roof when one s all tucked in and cozy... The hush of a snowstorm in the middle of the night... The joy of a bright warm day full of birdsong and bright blue skies.
Currently it is a sleepy rainy day here in PA.
7)Do you have any teddy bears/other stuffed animals? If so, do you have a favourite?
I had a well loved tattered teddy when I was very small named Teddy- she had been my brother John's first and he had loved all her fur off already. She did not last past my childhood though. I brought a big bear with me to uni- he is still at my parents and has gone through many names- Yeltsin, Boris, Meadvead (Russian for bear-honey-eater)
And I have the FAO Schwartz dolphin that my college sweetheart gave me back in the day, Rusalnichka (little mermaid in Russian). Though I did have to convince my nephew to give it back to me, and sometimes I need to tussle with my boys to keep her.
But my favorite stuffed toy? Greg's Boo, his big bear. He is so well loved, he looks very wise.
Which reminds me... Harry force-fed Boo a banana and he needs to be cleaned and re-stuffed.
Gotta go!

Date: 2012-05-21 07:29 pm (UTC)Poor poor Boo indeed. . Harry has yet to explain why exactly he felt the smashed banana was needed... My guess is the answer will be, "it's a long story, Mom..."
Must get out and get stuffing for the Boo.
